Allen, Celtics power past Mavericks

BOSTON, Massachusetts (AFP) - National Basketball Association champions Boston built a big first-half lead then cruised to a 124-100 victory over the Dallas Mavericks on Sunday.

Ray Allen scored 20 of his 23 points in the lopsided first half as the Celtics captured their eighth straight victory.

Kevin Garnett and reserve Eddie House chipped in 23 points apiece for the Celtics, whose current winning streak has made the memory of their recent 2-7 skid fade.

“Over the last couple games we started games with the mind set of we’re now back on track,” Allen said. “We are moving the ball as freely as I think we’ve been moving it, in the two years I’ve been here. We’re making plays for each other.”

House hit 7-of-11 three-point attempts for the Celtics, who made 13 of their first 18 three-point attempts. Boston improved to 37-9.

Rajon Rondo added 13 points, 11 assists and fell three rebounds shy of his second career triple-double.

Jason Terry scored 27 off the bench for the Mavericks, who finished a four-game road-trip at 2-2.

Boston led 38-23 after the first quarter and used another big scoring run to swell the gap.

After Dirk Nowitzki’s layup cut Dallas’ deficit to 43-31, Allen drained a jumper with 9:10 remaining to begin a 15-0 Boston spurt.

The Celtics stretched the lead to 31 points several times during a sizzling second quarter.

Dallas, like Phoenix on Monday, offered no resistance on defense. The Mavericks allowed Boston to shoot 65 percent in the first half trailed by an embarrassing 74-47 margin at halftime.

The Celtics cruised through the third quarter, and coach Doc Rivers rested his starters for all of the fourth quarter.

NBA - Heat end losing streak

The Miami Heat ended a 10-game losing streak to the Orlando Magic, sharp-shooter Dwyane Wade hitting 27 points in a 103-97 home win.

The NBA-scoring leader added eight rebounds and six assists as the Heat held off a fourth-quarter comeback bid by their Southeast Division rivals.

“This is a game we wanted to get,” Wade said. “We wanted to prove to ourselves that we can play with the elite teams.”

Mario Chalmers scored 20 points and Udonis Haslem delivered 12, including four clutch points in a tight fourth quarter.

Orlando, who lost to the Boston Celtics on Thursday, was led by Dwight Howard and Rashard Lewis. Howard finished with 22 points and 10 rebounds. Lewis had 21 points.

“The number one reason we lost is because they played well,” Magic coach Stan Van Gundy said. “I thought the Heat played a tremendous offensive game.”

Howard, who was ejected just before the final buzzer after his second technical foul, praised Wade’s contribution.

“He was Super Flash tonight,” Howard said. “He wasn’t just regular Flash. He was going 200 miles per hour. It was hard to stay in front of him.”

The Magic trailed by 15 points to start the final quarter but roared back to tie the score at 94-94 on Jameer Nelson’s three-pointer.

Haslem scored the game’s next four points for Miami as the Heat dealt the Magic their second division loss against seven wins.

“It was nice to see, offensively, that we had a lot of guys contribute,” Heat coach Erik Spoelstra said.

He also liked the way the Heat handled the ball, making a franchise-low four turnovers.
