We haven’t seen much of a battle for the GC so far, the hunt for the polka dot jersey is really taken off by now. Just like in the last edition there is no clear favorite in the KOM-classification, but a few riders have been announcing their interest. Last year Bernard Kohl finally made sure he went for that jersey, albeit that we now know how he did that.

After the Pyrenees the GC is completely open. Some riders, Kern, Pellizotti and Martinez, have made it clear that they want to make that extra effort, yet they can still be caught quite easily. Today’s stage might just prove that, all the cards needs to be open here. The three mentioned riders might have a good lead, the number of available points today and next week are more than sufficient. Pellizotti and Martinez have gone for peanuts, where they could have made a big step today. In relation to last year: Kohl wasn’t really challenged either by the riders that took points on early climbs as he took the big points on the last climb behind GC-leader Sastre and Frank Schleck.

This Tour is governed by Astana, so GC-riders that have already lost a few minutes could easily switch objective, a good initiative indeed. It is however a pity that those riders, like Menchov, are completely focused on the GC and they won’t attack therefore. The end result being that they won’t get anywhere in the GC, although Pellizotti is the exception as number three in the Giro.

Vatan - Saint-Fargeau Tour de France Live Online

Vatan - Saint-Fargeau Tour de France Live Online

The Tour traverses central France during this second week of the race, and heads east toward the border with Germany. This stage begins in Vatan and travels northeast to finish in Saint-Fargeau. Two categorized climbs enliven the proceedings, though they are unlikely to prove decisive in the end. This stage should end in a sprint. The final kilometer is slightly bowl-shaped, with a slight descent than a false-flat climb to the line. In the event of a headwind, timing the sprint correctly could prove tricky. Either way, it’s a finish for the fast men and an opportunity to chase points in the Green Jersey competition.

Both Vatan and Saint-Fargeau are Tour de France virgins. Neither town has ever hosted a Tour start or finish before this year. Vatan lies in the Champagne berrichonne, an open space of plainsland in central France. Also known as Septaine, this region is traversed by the Cher and Indre rivers and dotted with small villages and towns. Vatan is home to not much more than 2000 inhabitants.

Saint-Fargeau is similarly small, though it boasts a chateau dating from the tenth century. The Chateau de Saint-Fargeau holds annual festivals re-enacting events from its lengthy history, from knights in armor to American military vehicles from the Liberation. Saint-Fargeau is also known for its water-sports on the nearby lac du Bourdon.

The stages between Pyrenees and Alpes usually offer opportunities for breakers. The GC-riders prepare for the second mountain offensive, while the sprinters are still catching their breath. Nevertheless, this stage seems to be for the sprinters. Why not a breakaway? It isn’t a case of putting a few jokers up front in a succesful breakaway, which happened in the first week. It’s quite usual that breakers only manage to win a few stages in three weeks of racing. So, the psychology of that theory suggests that the breakers have had most of their chances by now.

This argument isn’t built on firm groud, obviously, but an ambitious young man from the Isle of Man will value underlining his superiority in the flat sprints. Having lost the green sprint jersey will only motivate him more, whether he wants the jersey in Paris or not.

So you better be sure that Cavendish is psyched for number three. The only obstacle will be the lack of collaboration. That ’sound’ is obviously produced by Stapleton and staff. But why would you help nine unbeatable men on bicycles, with Cavendish as their speerhead and minimal chances?

Only when Columbia doesn’t want to do that solitary effort - which leads to profiting by other teams - there is a chance of a break succeeding. On a continually up and down circuit there is of course the risk that Columbia will just give up. But in the end Garmin probably won’t be shy of pulling on the front either. Hushovd and Cervélo might not want a full mass sprint, yet they can’t deny having the green jersey either. That comes with responsibility.

The parcours of the 2009 Tour de France is definitely different. Observers often say that about the Tour’s parcours, but for once, saying that La Grande Boucle’s parcours is different is accurate. Several things will set the 2009 Tour apart from its recent predecessors. The first is the length of the race’s two individual time trials. The two events will total 55 km. The time trial distance ridden will be the second shortest in the race’s history; its shortness will give climbers a better-than-even chance of winning the race.

Second, the Tour will visit the second largest number of countries in the race’s history. The riders will begin their odyssey in Monaco and will ride in France, Spain, Andorra, Switzerland, and Italy. Only the 1992 Tour, which visited seven countries, was more peripatetic than the 2009 Tour will be. From Missing Saddle: The Pyrenees continue through the weekend, with 176 kilometers and three climbs on tap for stage 8 on Saturday. The course profile won’t allow a rider to make a Tour-winning move, but a bad day for a contender could prove damaging to GC hopes. The road kicks up as soon as the flag drops, on the Port d’Envalira, a category 1 climb that spans 23 K at an average grade of about 5%. After a long descent, the category 2 Col de Port (11 K, 5.5%) comes about halfway through the stage. Finally, the Col d’Agnes is a category 1 that averages 6% over 11 kilometers. The main bunch of contenders should stay together to at least this point. Because of the long descent to the finish in Saint-Girons, a race-altering move is not likely to be made.

the first mountain stage of this year’s Tour de France. For all 224 kilometres of today’s ride, the roads will be uphill - save for the descent of the first of the two climbs, the Port d’Oliana, a 7.7km-mountain averaging 7.1 percent gradient. Afterwards, it will be a long drag up to the tiny Principality of Andorra and its ski station, the first of three mountain top finishes of this year’s Tour.

The last time the Tour came to Arcalis, in 1997, Jan Ullrich broke away solo on the final stretch to the summit (10.6km at 7.1 percent) and lay the foundations for his later overall win. Today, the GC favourites should come out of their hiding places in the pack and put their climbing legs to the test. Spanish climbers will be especially motivated to score the victory in a bid for the polkadot - or the yellow jersey.

Among the contenders who may have to make early attacks are 2008 Tour winner Carlos Sastre, who is in 23rd place 2 minutes, 44 seconds behind Armstrong; Andy Schleck, who is 14th at 1:41 back; and his brother Frank Schleck, who is 19th at 2:17 back. Cadel Evans is 26th at 2:59 back, and Denis Menchov is 64th at 4:54 behind.
