Blaze On The Up

Coventry Blaze leapfrogged Nottingham Panthers to go second in the bmibaby Elite League with a 3-1 victory over their title rivals.

The hosts took the lead through Matt Myers in the eighth minute but Blaze responded with two goals in the second period from Sylvain Deschatelets and Erik Hjalmarsson.

Danny Stewart sealed the victory to leave the defending champions in second place, 10 points behind runaway leaders Sheffield Steelers with two games in hand.

The result means the Steelers extend their lead by a point following a 5-2 victory over Edinburgh Capitals, which saw them complete a weekend double over the Scots.

However, the Capitals at least found the back of the net, something they failed to do in the 4-0 defeat, thanks to a brace from Martin Cingel.

Steve Munn, Scott Basiuk, Robert Dowd and Jason Hewitt scored for the visitors.

Belfast Giants, who needed overtime to beat Basingstoke Bison at home last night, were a lot more emphatic on the road against the league’s bottom club, rampaging to a 7-1 drubbing.

The Giants are level on points with Blaze and also have two games in hand on the Steelers.

Hull Stingrays moved level on points with the Capitals in the chase for the play-offs with a 5-2 victory over Newcastle Vipers.

Elsewhere, Manchester Phoenix beat Cardiff Devils 2-0.

Malkin, Ovechkin shine in NHL SuperSkills contest

MONTREAL (AFP) - Russian compatriots Alex Ovechkin and Evgeni Malkin highlighted SuperSkills competition, one of the curtain-raisers to Sunday’s National Hockey League All-Star game.

Malkin, of the Pittsburgh Penguins, assisted Ovechkin during the Washington Capitals superstar’s Breakaway Challenge triumph, then went on to win the Accuracy Shooting contest.

Boston Bruins captain Zdeno Chara later won his third straight Hardest Shot title, setting a record in the process.

Andrew Cogliano of the Edmonton Oilers claimed the Fastest Skater title, while Phoenix Coyotes captain Shane Doan outlasted Boston’s Marc Savard to win the Elimination Shootout.

With the YoungStars Game using a new format, Blake Wheeler of the Bruins notched four goals to lead the Rookies to a 9-5 triumph over the Sophomores.

Ovechkin and Malkin, rumored to be at odds after a reported confrontation during the offseason, showed no sigh of a rift during the Breakaway Challenge.

Going last in a field of six players, Ovechkin attempted several trick shots before skating back to center ice, where Malkin awaited with a sack.

Malkin pulled out a hat and sunglasses out of the bag for Ovechkin to put on, before offering his countryman a drink.

Ovechkin then borrowed Malkin’s stick and took off on his final attempt.

Using two sticks to carry the puck down the ice, Ovechkin threw away his own before tucking his own rebound past a non-NHL goaltender.

With fans choosing the winner of the event, Ovechkin received 42.8 percent of the votes, easily beating hometown star Alexei Kovalev of the Montreal Canadiens, who finished second with 19.7 percent.

Later in the evening, Malkin went a perfect 4-for-4 in the Accuracy Shooting but was forced to a tiebreaker by Dany Heatley of the Ottawa Senators. Malkin, 22, then hit three targets on four attempts, edging Heatley by one to win.
