Brawn GP’s Rubens Barrichello and Jenson Button fought their way through a thrilling and chaotic qualifying hour at the Nürburgring today to secure second and third positions on the grid for Sunday’s 60-lap German Grand Prix. With rain threatening, all the cars were quickly out on track at the start of Q1 with Rubens and Jenson running on the softer option tyre and completing two runs to safely progress into the second session.

Light rain at the start of Q2 rapidly became heavier with both drivers coming into the pits after just a couple of laps to replace their slick tyres for intermediates. As the rain seemed to ease, Rubens dived back in and switched to slicks and immediately was the quickest car on track with a lap which topped the timesheets for the remainder of the session. Jenson changed to slicks with just enough time for one timed lap which he made count as the rain started to fall again.

After the drama of Q2, the conditions stayed dry for Q3 with Rubens and Jenson posting their quick laps in the final seconds of the session, achieving second and third positions respectively.

“I’m really happy,” enthused Sutil afterwards, “for sure one of F1’s happiest guys today! It’s my home race and my best qualifying position so far in F1, so it was a great qualifying for us. It was very tricky with the weather, but our decisions were very good and on-time, particularly in Q2 with the rain. We took a risk on dry tyres and we did it a lap earlier than all the others and got the third-fastest time.

“Finally, even with the fuel on-board, Q3 went really well and we got into seventh. I am very happy for everyone in the team. We’ve worked really hard in the last months. Now we just have to score some points!”

“First of all, I am very pleased for the team and for Adrian to have had such a great qualifying,” added Fisichella. “It was an incredible result, and hopefully we’ll be able to have a good race tomorrow. For me it was a bit disappointing. We went out early in the first session, but unfortunately I got caught in traffic on both of my fastest laps. It was a real shame as with the weather conditions I think we could have done really well, but it could be mixed weather tomorrow so you never know what’s possible.”

Having entered the weekend aiming to build on the encouraging form witnessed last time out at Silverstone with another Q2 appearance, team chairman Vijay Mallya admitted that he had never even dared dream about getting into Q3 – but like Sutil, the Kingfisher Airlines billionaire affirmed that points are now overdue, after Force India arguably deserved to score in China, Monaco and Britain already this year only to come away cruelly empty-handed on each occasion.

“Needless to say, I am absolutely delighted with the team’s performance today,” Mallya underlined. “We came to Germany hoping to get to Q2, and we got to Q3 thanks to a superb team performance and a stunning session from Adrian. To do so on his home soil will no doubt make it extra-special for him. We are now in a good position for tomorrow’s race, and I hope we can finally get those much longed-for points.”

“P7 after Q3 for Adrian was a fantastic performance and a reward for the team’s efforts recently,” agreed chief race engineer Dominic Harlow. “The weather played its part, but he secured the position on merit. It was an exciting session, and I think that we got the calls right today.

“Giancarlo was unfortunate in that his second outing in Q1 was affected by traffic with so many cars on the circuit, and with things being so tight he didn’t make the cut. Otherwise I’m sure that he too could have progressed to a strong qualifying position. Our goal of course has to be putting those first points on the board in the race.”

Lewis’s first session was devoted to understanding and evaluating new aerodynamic components for MP4-24 – principally a substantially revised floor section and matching top body. With modifications to the car carrying on into the first session, and with the morning’s running briefly interrupted by a rain shower, Lewis completed just two runs (five laps/1m34.483s and four laps/1m35.945s) and ended P1 in 13th position. “The car still lacks downforce,” said Lewis afterwards, “but there’s definitely been an improvement from the new parts we tried today.”

More spots of rain delayed the start of Lewis’s afternoon programme, but he still completed three runs, this time with the added benefit of the new FW5 front wing, recording runs of eight laps/1m33.059s (Primes), four laps/1m32.413s (Options) and three laps/1m32.149s (Options). The engineers used this session to back-to-back the new front wing against the older iteration while also refining the balance of the new package over long runs.

Lewis said: “We’ve still got a long way to go but, most importantly, these new upgrades are pushing us in the right direction. It’s a work in progress, but the guys back at the factory have done an incredible job to get these parts to the circuit – I’ve even heard of one guy working a 36-hour non-stop shift to build these parts, which is incredible. Hopefully we’ll now do our job at the track and try to keep everything moving forward. It’s still early days, and we shouldn’t get ahead of ourselves, but I’m hopeful of being able to get into Q3 tomorrow and look at scoring a couple of points on Sunday afternoon.”

Lewis Hamilton, “The last time we raced at the Nürburgring was in 2007, and I remember I had a tough afternoon battling through from the back of the field to finish just outside the points. It’s a fantastic circuit, a little older than a lot of the current tracks we currently visit and with quite a different feel to what we’re used to: it’s fast and flowing with some good spots for overtaking.

“And it’s in a fantastic part of the world too; deep in the forests of western Germany, where the fans seem to live and breathe Formula 1. It’s always an amazing party atmosphere whenever we race in Germany.

“While we aren’t expecting any major upgrades for this weekend, I’m still looking forward to the race. It’s an honour to be part of the Silver Arrows and, while our results haven’t recently shown it, we’re still pushing incredibly hard and are all hopeful of moving closer to the front before the end of this difficult season.

Corners such as turns 5/6, 8/9 and 10/11 in particular demand a neutral handling balance to avoid compromising the optimum line through the second corner in the sequence, and the engineers will often work through the weekend to dial out understeer in the medium-speed corners.
